Bartali Climbs Away
The 1936 Giro d'Italia was the 24th edition of Italy’s Grand Tour.
SPECIAL NOTE: The radical “political fighting” in 1936 Italy kept foreign riders from entering the race.
SPECIAL NOTE: For the 1936 Giro the organizers offered a 20 km Mountain Time Trial to the top of Monte Terminillo.
Climbing brilliantly, Gino Bartali took the race lead on stage 9 with a long breakaway over the Passo Rionero. Over the remaining twelve stages Bartali won every major climb and held the Maglia Rosa until the finish in Milan. Bartali also captured the Best ClimberTitle, his second.

Race Summary:
Stage 3: Two-time Giro winner and Italy’s first Campionissimo Costante Girardengo abandoned the race on stage 3. This would be the last stage Giro Girardengo would ride.
Stage 9: 204 km from Campobasso to L'Aquila, Gino Bartali broke away with Cesare Del Cancia and Giovanni Valetti and won the very tough stage 9 (climbing the Rionero Sannitico and the Cinquemiglia). Bartali gained 7’15” on race leader Giuseppe Olmo and took the lead Maglia Rosa. Bartali kept the GC lead all the way to Milan.
Stage 11: 20 km ITT from Rieti to Monte Terminillo, Giuseppe Olmo won the first timed “hill climb” to the summit of Monte Terminillo.
